Hold your loved ones close today, whisper in their ear.
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear.
Take time to say "I'm sorry", "Please forgive me",
"Thank you", or "I love you".
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

Amanda Marie DeSarro

Age 21

June 11, 1986 - April 8, 2008

Amanda is our beautiful 21 year old daughter. She was born on June 11, 1986, in East Liverpool, Ohio, where she lived her entire, short life. Amanda was a very active child, always wanting to go hiking, fishing or do something outdoors.  She grew up in a neighborhood with mostly boys so she spent alot of time doing boy things...from the very young age of about 5 she started riding dirtbikes and quads.  She and her friends rode almost on a daily basis growing up. Everyone had a dirtbike and thats what they spent their summers doing and Amanda loved it!! The kids often spent their summer nights having campfires under the starlit night sky. Amanda also loved swimming and sunbathing at the pool in our backyard or skiing in the winter. She was very active and always wanted to be doing something with friends and loved ones!!  After high school Amanda attended Kent State and eventually received certification in phlebotomy which she absolutely loved doing! She was employed at Dunham's Sports Store during this time and truly loved her friends and co-workers there! Chance and Hali are Amanda's younger brother and sister. She loved them dearly and treated them as if she were a younger version of their mother...always looking out for them and helping take care of them!! Amanda was dating Kaleb whom she thought the world of and who treated her amazingly! Amanda was a very special person who treated everyone with love and respect! She was a very honest, loving, sincere and loyal person to those she loved. She had an amazing smile and cute sense of humor...she had a unique ability to make everyone around her laugh!! Amanda was a true friend to all who knew her!! She is loved tremendously and painfully missed by all her friends and family!!

On Tuesday, April 8th, 2008, she went to the bank to cash a check, then went to McDonald's to get lunch. She got a salad and her usual sweet tea. I'm sure Amanda was in a great mood because it was a beautiful day and the sun was shining brightly. She loved sunny days!! The hotter, the better!! She pulled on to Route 170 and continued to the intersection of 170 and Dresden. Amanda had a green light and proceeded thru the intersection. When she was almost completely thru she was hit by a 90 year old lady who ran the red light. We were told that the lady didn't see any of the traffic lights at the intersection. Amanda's car turned completely over and finally came to rest on the driver's side.

Although our sweet and loving Amanda's hopes and dreams came to an abrupt and tragic end that Tuesday morning, we can only pray that she did not suffer. She was an amazing girl and had a huge impact on so many people!! Yes, she was beautiful. Amanda had beautiful dark brown eyes and a smile that would light up any room she walked into. Her smile was so bright, it was the first thing most people noticed about her! Amanda was only 4 foot 9.5 inches tall and weighed less than 90 pounds but her personality was bigger than life. She truly was more beautiful on the inside than on the outside!

We live in a wonderful community where friends, family and neighbors have been so supportive. Our family is very grateful to everyone. We are trying to focus our energy on creating a memorial scholarship in Amanda's honor. We really believe that Amanda is watching down on us and knows all that is going on!! I know that she is very proud of everyone!!

Don't Tell Me I Am Strong

Do not tell me I am strong
You only see my days,
Filled with details and work.

You have never shared my nights,
Long evenings empty,
Except for memories and tears.

My despair is sacrificed
to responsibility.
You would be strong too
If you had no other choice!

 OUR FAMILY CHAIN
We little knew that morning,
That God would call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
you did not go alone,
For part of us went with you,
the day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories,
your love is still our guide.
And though we cannot see you,
you are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
our chain will link again!!

Siblings

It is said that when your parents die,you lose your past; When your spouse dies, you lose your present; And when your child dies you lose your future.

However, when your sibling dies, you lose your past, your present, and your future. After all, the relationship between siblings is potentially the longest in their lives!

Hali Amanda & Chance

IF...

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

If I Had My Child to Raise Over Again

If I had my child to raise all over again,
I'd finger-paint more, and point the fingers less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less and know to care more.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging.
I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I'd teach less about the love of power, And more about the power of love.

I'd wrap my arms around my daughter, and never let her go!

The Man In The Glass
Anonymous

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your father or mother or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum
And think you’re a wonderful guy.
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.

He’s the fellow to please-never mind all the rest,
For he’s with you clear to the end.
And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass.
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.

My little angel..I'll miss you every second of everyday, for the rest of my life, until we meet again!

My Mom is a Survivor

My Mom is a survivor,
or so I've heard it said.
But I can hear her crying at night
when all others are in bed.

I watch her lay awake at night
and go to hold her hand.
She doesn't know I'm with her
to help her understand.

But like the sands on the beach
that never wash away ...
I watch over my surviving Mom
who thinks of me each day.

She wears a smile for others ...
a smile of disguise!
But through Heaven's door
I see tears flowing from her eyes.

My Mom tries to cope with death;
To keep my memory alive.
But anyone who knows her knows
it is her way to survive.

As I watch over my surviving Mom
through Heaven's open door ...
I try to tell her that angels
protect me forevermore!

I know that doesn't help her,
or ease the burden she bears.
So, if you get a chance, go visit her.
Show her that you care.

For no matter what she says ...
no matter what she feels.
My surviving Mom has a broken heart
that time won't ever heal.

AMANDA MARIE DESARRO

Clocks tick, but time will not pass

The sun will rise and the sun will set

but her shadow remains.

Where once was sounds now is silence.

I miss you, I love you, my heart is shattered.

But for only now, what I see, where I go,

my experiences, my achievements, my everyday

life, my training, my adventures, all the way to my

return home

to where my life began and yours was sadly taken

For everytime I visit home, I will come visit you.

Not a day will go by that I won't stop to think for two

Because not a day will go by that I won't remember you.

I Love You Amanda Marie DeSarro

AMANDA'S LONG TIME FRIEND

Stationed in Iraq

What is Normal after your child dies?
Normal is having tears waiting behind every smile when you realize someone very special is missing from all the important events in your
family's life.

Normal is trying to decide what to take to the cemetery for Birthdays, X-mas, Thanksgiving, New Years, Valentine's Day, or July 4th.

Normal is feeling like you can't sit another minute without getting up and screaming, because you just don't like to sit through anything anymore.

Normal is not sleeping very well because a thousand what if's & why didn't I's go through your head constantly.

Normal is reliving the accident continuously in your mind, holding your head to try to make the horrible thoughts go away.

Normal is having the TV on the minute you walk into the house to have noise, because the silence is deafening.

Normal is staring at every girl who looks like she is Amanda's age. And then thinking of what she'd  be doing now. Then wondering why it is even important to imagine it, because it will never happen.

Normal is every happy event in your life always being backed up with
sadness lurking close behind, because of the hole in your heart.

Normal is telling the story of your child's death as if it were
an everyday, commonplace activity, and then seeing the horror in
someone's eyes at how awful it sounds. And yet realizing it has
become a part of your "normal."

Normal is each year coming up with the difficult task of how to honor your childs's memory and their birthdays and survive these days. And trying to find the balloon or flag that fit's the occasion. Happy Birthday? Not really.

Normal is my heart warming and yet sinking at the sight of something special Amanda loved. Thinking how she would love it, but how she is not here to enjoy it.

Normal is having some people afraid to mention my daughter, Amanda.
Normal is making sure that others remember her.

Normal is after the funeral is over everyone else goes on with their lives, but we continue to grieve our loss forever.

Normal is weeks, months, and years after the initial shock, the grieving gets worse, not better.

Normal is not listening to people compare anything in their life to this loss, unless they too have lost a CHILD. Nothing compares.
NOTHING.
Even if your child is in the most remote part of the earth away from you - it doesn't compare.

Losing a parent is horrible, but having to bury your own child is unnatural.

Normal is taking pills, and trying not to cry all day, because you know your mental health depends on it.

Normal is realizing you do cry everyday.

Normal is being impatient with everything and everyone except someone stricken with grief over the loss of their child.

Normal is sitting at the computer crying, sharing how you feel with chat buddies who have also lost a child.
Normal is not listening to people make excuses for
God.
"God may have done this because..."

I know Amanda is in "heaven," but hearing people trying to think up excuses as to why a fantastic young girl was taken from this earth is extremely difficult and makes absolutely no sense to this grieving mother.

Normal is being too tired to care if you paid the bills, cleaned the house, did the laundry or even if there is any food.

Normal is wondering this time whether you are going to say you have three children or two children, because you will never see this person again and it is not worth explaining that Amanda is gone.
And yet when you say you have two children to avoid that pain, you feel horrible as if you have betrayed her.

Normal is asking God why he took your child's life instead of yours and asking if there even is a God.

Normal is knowing you will never get over this loss, not in a day nor a million years.

Normal is having therapists agree with you that you will never "really" get over the pain and that there is nothing they can do to help you because they know only bringing your child back from the dead could possibly make it "better."

Normal is learning to lie to everyone you meet and telling them you are fine. You lie because it makes others uncomfortable if you cry. You've learned it's easier to lie to them then to tell them the truth that you still feel empty and it's probably never going to get any better...ever.

And last of all...
Normal is hiding all the things that have become "normal" for you to feel, so that everyone around you will think that you are "normal."

I Miss You When I'm Sad,

I Miss You When I'm Lonely

But Most of All,

I Miss You When I'm Happy

Thanks Stacey!!!

Amanda absolutely LOVED Lucy!! She watched every single one of her shows and knew most of the lines word-for-word!! She and I started watching Lucy when Amanda was really young. Her favorite was "Vitameatavegimin". Amanda could repeat every line of it word-for-word and it was hillarious to watch her do this and act just like Lucy!! Amanda collected all kinds of Lucy stuff and had it displayed all over her room (Her room is still like that today). If you look closely at her pictures in her room, you'll see some of her Lucy stuff in the background!!

Earthbound Angel

Occasionally, we are graced with the presence of an earth bound Angel.
They are unable to stay with us for long,
but while they do, they bring unprecedented
joy and happiness to all they touch.

While they are here, we bask in their goodness and marvel at their contribution to the world.
When they leave, we are left with the devastation that comes with losing such a wonderful being,
but we must remember the earth bound Angels are not ours to keep.
They are ours to enjoy, learn from, and behold until they return home.

Calcutta Intersection

Wow, the intersection in calcutta looks beautiful thanks to some very special people!!  Mike & Heather Hitt, Bill Hildebrand, Jason Bahen, and Kelsey Hedrick worked together to place a gorgeous cross and sign there on the hill near where Amanda's accident occured.  The beautiful cross was made by Mike Hitt and painted pink because as we all know, that was Amanda's favorite color!!  I was worried that they wouldn't be able to dig through the rock there on the hill to place these memorials but thanks to this special group of friends, they were able to do it!!!  I hope that as people drive through Calcutta, they will take a minute to think about Amanda and how special she was to all of us and also remember to drive safely!!  If you're in Dunham's, let the gang know how much their love and dedication to Amanda is appreciated!!! I Never Knew

I never knew how much I could miss you,

Until the day I could see you no more.

I never knew how empty my heart could be,

Living my life is not life anymore.

I never knew how much a heart could ache,

No medicine can take this pain away.

My soul has been bruised and torn,

I became a different person that day.

I never knew loneliness until now,

I can be in a crowd and yet feel so alone.

So few people I can share my pain with,

I wish this terrible loneliness was gone.

I never knew but now I know,

With the loss of your child,

Your life, your whole world changes.

I never knew until, I lost my precious child!

I would like to give a special "Thank-You" to Taylor Pyle, Matt Beatty, Jason Bahen, Krissa Trombetta and Sam Irwin.  These kids arrived early in the morning and were the last to leave the park after everything had been cleaned up and put away!!!!  Again, I am sooo proud of the students from our two local schools!!!  They are truly amazing!!!  Thank-you to all those community members who came out to the beautiful park for the day to enjoy the activities and support the students.  The two bands, Route 45 and Rumors volunteered their time for the day and did a fantastic job as usual!!!  Amanda's and Paige's families are sooo thankful to everyone!!!!!!!!

thank you enough for everything you've done!!

Bobby, your dedication and kindness is unmatched!!!

The compassion you have for these kids comes

shinning through in your actions and your words!!

Thanks you for all the many hours you've spent in

preparation of this event!! The Band Rumors was

fantastic as usual! It was so nice of them to donate

their time to play for the event!! The concession

Pam and Sandy. I can't imagine the work they've

We appreciate everything they've done!!! I know

Sandy had to contend with this the day after

Ask My Mom How She Is

My Mom, she tells a lot of lies
she never did before.
From now until she dies,
she'll tell a whole lot more.
Ask my Mom how she is
and because she can't explain,
She will tell a little lie
because she can't describe the pain.
Ask my Mom how she is,
She'll say "I'm alright."
If that's the truth, then tell me,
why does she cry each night?
Ask my Mom how is she,
she seems to cope so well.
She didn't have a choice you see
nor the strength to yell.
Ask my Mom how she is,
"I'm fine, I'm well, I'm coping."
For Gods sake Mom, just tell the truth
just say your heart is broken.
She'll love me all her life,
I loved her all of mine.
But if you ask her how she is,
she'll lie and say she's fine.
I am here in Heaven.
I cannot hug from here.
If she lies to you don't listen,
Hug her and hold her near.
On the day we meet again,
we'll smile and I'll be bold.
I'll say, "You're lucky to get in here, Mom
with all the lies you told!"

Birthday Balloon Launch ~ 6/11/08

Amanda's Birthday Balloon Launch
Amanda's birthday was celebrated by friends and family members with a balloon launch on June 11, at 7:00 at the Columbiana Memorial Cemetery. Balloons were released with tags explaining how Amanda passed away. Many people wrote messages on the back with their names so that anyone finding a balloon could comment on this site on where the balloons were found and who launched the balloons!!! Thanks to everyone who took part in our balloon launch!!

Jamie Mick's Dance Recital
A great big "Thank You" to Jamie and Scott Mick and all of her students who performed at the dance recital!! Your tribute to Amanda, Paige and Jamie's Grandparents was unbelievably beautiful and touching!!  I don't think there was a dry eye in the house. Our families were honored by your love and kindness. It was so thoughtful of you to donate proceeds to the girls' scholarship funds. Also a big Thank You to Traci Furman for the amazing job she did on the powerpoint presentation!! We feel truly blessed to live in such a great community!!  Thank you to all who were involved and dedicated so much time and energy to the performance. I'm sure Amanda feels touched to know people care so much!!

As I Grow

~Author Unknown~

Please understand I am growing up and changing very fast.
It must be difficult to keep pace with me, but please try.

Please reward me for telling the truth.
Then I am not frightened into lying.

Please tell me when you make mistakes and what you learned from them.
Then I can accept that I am okay, even when I blunder.

Please pay attention to me and spend time with me.
Then I can believe that I am important and worthwhile.

Please help me explore my unique interests, talents and potential.
In order for me to be happy, I need to be me.

Please do the things you want me to do.
Then I have a good, positive model.

Please tell me by your words and actions that you love me.
Then I will feel loveable and will be able to love myself and others.
